Lymphatic care
Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage is gentle, individualized care designed to complement your recovery plan following an appropriate surgical procedure. Sessions use light, precise movements and are adapted to your procedure, stage of recovery, comfort level, comfort with touch, and your surgeon’s instructions.
This work is not traditional deep-tissue massage. Pressure remains light and treatment is approached thoughtfully, with close attention to comfort, safety, and the needs of healing tissue.
Potential Benefits During Recovery
- Encourages the movement of lymphatic fluid through appropriate pathways
- May help manage temporary post-surgical swelling
- May ease sensations of tightness, heaviness, or fullness
- May improve comfort as the body moves through recovery
- Provides gentle, individualized support when deeper pressure is not appropriate
- May support the body’s natural recovery process as swelling and tissue changes evolve
- May help soften the appearance or feel of developing areas of firmness, fibrosis, or scar tissue when appropriate for the stage of healing
- May support mobility and comfort around healed scar tissue once cleared by the surgeon
- Complements—but does not replace—the recovery plan established by your surgeon
Post-operative experiences and results vary. Manual Lymphatic Drainage cannot guarantee reduced swelling, faster healing, prevention of complications, prevention of fibrosis, or elimination of scar tissue. Fibrosis and scar tissue can have many causes and may require evaluation or treatment by a qualified medical professional. MLD is not a substitute for medical care, wound care, compression, movement, or other recommendations provided by your surgeon.
It does not replace medical care, and The Well Space does not provide wound care, drain management, seroma aspiration, scar revision, fibrosis diagnosis, or medical diagnosis.
Post-Operative Support Includes
- Gentle lymphatic techniques appropriate to the procedure and stage of recovery
- Careful attention to areas of swelling, tightness, heaviness, or fullness
- Support for comfort around healed incision sites when cleared by the surgeon
- Gentle work around developing firmness, fibrosis, or scar tissue only when appropriate and medically cleared
- Guidance to follow the surgeon’s instructions regarding compression, movement, positioning, and follow-up care
- Communication with the client about comfort, sensitivity, and changes that should be reported to the surgeon
Treatment is never performed directly over open wounds, unhealed incisions, active infection, drains, or areas that have not been cleared for touch. Any work near an incision or scar is adapted to the healing stage and performed only when appropriate.
Thoughtful Care at Every Stage
Your procedure, healing timeline, current symptoms, incision status, scar-tissue concerns, and surgeon’s instructions help guide each session. Before booking, you will complete a post-operative intake form so your needs can be reviewed and treatment can be appropriately planned.
Clients should obtain clearance from their surgeon before beginning post-operative MLD, particularly after extensive procedures, when drains are present, when healing has been delayed, or when there are concerns about swelling, fibrosis, scar tissue, infection, or other complications.
If you develop increasing pain, redness, warmth, fever, shortness of breath, unusual drainage, wound separation, sudden or worsening swelling, or another concerning symptom, contact your surgeon or seek medical care before scheduling massage.
